Cardinal Wrestlers Dominate W&J Invite, Take Team Title and 7 Weights

WASHINGTON, Pa. – In one of the best performances of it young three-year history, the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinal Culture wrestlers dominated the Washington & Jefferson Invitational field Saturday. WJU won the team title by 82 points and claimed seven weight class championships.

Coach Sean Doyle's wrestlers produced a 209-point team score, 81.5 points better than runner-up Millersville (127.5) and won the 10-team field.

The Cardinals won seven individual titles of the 10 weight class by Dustin Warner (125), Nolan Whitely (133), Preston Bowshier (141), Reyse Wallbrown (157), Peyton Geary (165), Terrance Fanning (197) and Corey Siegfried (285).

At 149, Dominick Nania added another WJU wrestler who did not lose on the day, but was pulled out of competition and finished fourth. Rounding out the Cardinal placewinners, Keegan Driscoll (165) was fifth, while both Josh Henderson (125) and Clayton Ray (174) were each sixth.

Warner highlighted his 3-0 day by pinning the No. 5 ranked NCAA DIII wrestler Jacob Spearman from Washington & Jefferson to take the 125-pound title.

At 133, Whitely went 5-0 and defeated Heidelberg's Ryan Homack, 3-1, in the finals. Bowshier grabbed the 141-pound title with an 11-6 decision over Dam Pommerer of Washington & Jefferson for his 4-0 day.

For the 157-pound title, Wallbrown continued a strong early season with a 4-0 day and a 5-3 decision finals win, 5-3, over Trevor Meyers of Washington & Jefferson. Geary garnered the top 165 placing with four-straight wins capped by a finals fall over Thiel's Chris Nuss in 4:39.

Redshirt freshman Fanning won all four of his 197-pound matches with two early tech falls, before winning the championship in a 3-1 decision over Aram Moffitt of Millersville.

Siegfried completed the WJU standouts. The 285-pounder allowed only two points in four wins, including a 2-0 shutout over Waynesburg's Greg Kumer in the finals.

WJU opens its dual match season next Thursday night, Nov. 19, at rival West Liberty starting at 7 p.m.
