Ashland Holds Off Toppers

February 11, 2014

ASHLAND, Ohio – No. 17-ranked Ashland notched back-to-back pins at 141 and 149 to take the lead for good Tuesday night and went on to hand the West Liberty University wrestling team a 29-15 setback at Kates Gymnasium.

Coach Brian Davis's Hilltoppers (4-3) had taken an early 6-3 lead on the strength of a forfeit at 125 but the Eagles (8-7) bounced back with a first-period fall from 141-pounder Anthony Pavlich and a second-period pin by Brent Fickel at 149 to take a 15-6 lead.

West Liberty kept things interesting by winning three of the next four matches. Decisions by Bryan Skoff (157), Eric Antesberger (174) and Danny Doyle (184) trimmed the deficit to 18-15 but Ashland's Joe Brandt locked things up with a technical fall at 197. The Hilltoppers then surrendered a forfeit at 285 to conclude the scoring.

West Liberty returns home to host Gannon Friday night at 7 p.m. in the ASRC.
