HILLTOPPER MAT SQUAD COMPETES IN MIDWEST CLASSIC

December 13-14, 2014

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The short-handed West Liberty University wrestling team had a pair of grapplers make their marks here as the 36th annual Midwest Classic wound down at the University of Indianapolis on Sunday.

Zach Brown, the Hilltoppers' 125-pounder, and 157-pounder David Schlieper made the deepest runs for the Black and Gold at the prestigious tournament which attracted 26 of the nation's top NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA mat squads.

Brown was bounced early from the championship bracket at 125 but rebounded in the consolation rounds with a bye, a decision and a first-period fall only to come up one win shy of placing in the event.

Schlieper also made his presence felt in the consolation bracket at 157, posting back-to-back first-period falls after being bounced from the Round of 16 in the championship bracket. Schlieper's run also finished one win short of getting into the place matches.

The Midwest Classic meet wrapped up West Liberty's pre-holiday schedule. Coach Brian Davis' Hilltoppers return to the mats on Jan. 3 when they travel to Ashland (Ohio) for a triangular with Ashland and Olivet (Mich.).
