Toppers Rally Past LIU

January 9, 2016
AT East Stroudsburg PA

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The West Liberty University wrestling team split a triangular Saturday afternoon, knocking off LIU-Post by a 24-19 count before dropping a 20-13 decision to host East Stroudsburg.

Coach Mitch Smith's Hilltoppers (3-8) spotted the Pioneers (6-9) an early lead in the opener before reeling off five straight wins to put the match on ice.

Zach Brown got WLU off to a flying start with a fall at 125 but LIU-Post bounced back with consecutive technical falls and a decision for a 13-6 lead.

It was all West Liberty after that.

David Schlieper and DeMadre Turner posted back-to-back wins at 157 and 165 before Eric VandenBossche put the Hilltoppers ahead to stay, 15-13, with an 11-5 win at 174 against the Pioneers' Dan Arkow.

Daniel Carpenter applied the coup de grace with a fall at 184 and Nate Dawson pushed West Liberty's lead to 24-13 with a 4-3 nod against Jake Horton in their 197-pound bout.

Post picked up a forfeit win at 285 to make the final margin a bit more respectable.

The Hilltoppers and Warriors (5-2) battled on even terms throughout their match with the hosts able to pull out the win at the end.

West Liberty grabbed a quick 6-0 lead when Brown and 133-pounder Jonathan Spence opened with back-to-back decisions.

Momentum swung back in the Warriors' favor when they followed a technical fall at 141 with back-to-back one-point decisions at 149 and 157 to take an 11-6 lead.

A major decision by Turner at 165 pulled West Liberty within a point, 11-10, but another one-point decision – ESU's third one-point decision of the match – at 174 pounds gave the hosts a 14-10 lead.

That allowed East Stroudsburg 184-pounder Tyler Richardson to put the match out of reach with a first-period fall, pushing the count to 20-10.

The Hilltoppers' Dawson closed out the match with his second win of the day, a 3-1 verdict in the first sudden victory period. There was no 285-pound bout.

West Liberty goes back on the road Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. dual at Ohio Valley University in Vienna, W.Va.
