No. 19 Mountaineers Finish 1-2 at Northeast Duals

TROY, N.Y. - The No. 19 West Virginia University wrestling team had a 1-2 showing at the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals in Troy, New York, on Sunday. The Mountaineers picked up a 19-13 win over Buffalo while suffering a 21-12 setback to No. 3 Michigan and a 23-9 loss to Oregon State.

No. 16/18 Dylan Cottrell went 3-0 on the day while No. 3/4 Zeke Moisey, No. 8 Jacob A. Smith, Bubba Scheffel posted 2-1 records. Cottrell improved to 6-0 on the season, while Moisey and Smith improved their marks to 5-1 in their respective weight classes.

The Mountaineers started the day against the No. 3 Wolverines, with Moisey taking a 6-4 decision over No. 5 Conor Youtsey at 125 pounds. Youtsey was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after the final whistle, costing Michigan a team point to put the score at 3-(-1). The Wolverines earned decisions at 133 and 141 pounds before taking a major decision at 149 to lead 9-3. Cottrell scored a win by fall in the first period of his bout with Myles Amine at 157 pounds, tying the score at 9-9. Ross Renzi lost a tough 3-1 decision to No. 18 Garrett Sutton at 165 before VonEgidy won a 9-7 decision against No. 11 Davonta Mahomes at 174 pounds, knotting the score at 12-12. However, the Wolverines won a pair of decisions to close out the match to earn the 21-12 triumph.

Moisey started WVU with a win against Buffalo, picking up a 5-3 decision over Kyle Akins at 125. The Bulls won three straight weights to take a 10-3 advantage heading into the 157-pound bout. Cottrell again stopped the WVU skid with a 12-3 major decision over Timothy Schaefer to cut the deficit to three, down 10-7. Tim Wheeling won a 7-3 decision over Tyler Rill at 165 pounds to tie the match 10-10 before VonEgidy won a 7-5 decision over Muhamed McBryde at 174 as the Mountaineers took a 13-10 advantage.

In the final match of the day, Moisey fell in a 3-2 decision to Ronnie Rios at 125. Oregon State picked up wins at 133, 141 and 149 to take a 13-0 lead. Cottrell finished the day unblemished with an 8-4 decision over the Beavers’ Abraham Rodriguez, cutting WVU’s deficit to 13-3. The Mountaineers bounced back after a pair of setbacks with decisions from Scheffel (184) over Corey Griego (3-2) and Jacob A. Smith over Cody Crawford (4-2). The No. 20-ranked Beavers finished the match with a 23-9 victory.

West Virginia returns to action Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Joe Parisi Open in St. Charles, Missouri.
